Is Your Nursery or School Ready for the 2025 Recycling Changes? Here's What You Need to Know!
The UK government has rolled out a new recycling plan aimed at making recycling easier, cleaner, and more efficient for everyone. Starting March 31, 2025, all businesses—including schools, nurseries, and pre-schools—must comply with these updated regulations. That means you need to prepare now to avoid fines and help your community become more sustainable.
Here’s what’s changing and what you need to do:
What’s Included in the New Regulations?
The new recycling guidelines simplify the process.
- 1 The same bin can be used for dry mixed recycling of glass, metal, plastic, paper and cardboard.
- 2 Food waste can no longer be mixed with general rubbish. It must go into a dedicated food waste container.
- 3. Offensive Waste including nappies, sanitary waste, incontinence pads and soft non-hazardous waste e.g. used couch roll, must be segregated and disposed of properly – including evidence of the final disposal destination (all of which is covered under the Duty of Care Certificate).
In a nutshell, all businesses will need at least three separate waste containers to be compliant by the deadline, with Nurseries, aesthetic studios, tattoo parlours etc needing a minimum of 4
General Waste
Offensive Waste
Dry Mixed Recycling waste
Food Waste
The good news? This system is designed to save you money and boost recycling rates, helping your sustainability efforts while reducing costs.
