From Amalgam “Dental Chair Packages” (Cap Guard, Bridges / Crowns), Amalgam gypsum waste, Toxic and hazardous chemicals such as Botox, sharps, sterilising chemicals, used swabs, specialist equipment and tools – to the more general waste used in most businesses.

In 2005 The Hazardous Waste Regulations came into legislation and requires dental waste – including needles and amalgam items – to be classified as hazardous waste and disposed of accordingly. Failing to comply is seen as a major risk to both patients and employees and carries substantial fines of £5000.
Hazardous waste can include: Amalgam Separators; Needles and Sharps; Sterilisers and Disinfectants; Ultrasonic Cleaners; X-ray Fixer and Developer; Expired Pharmaceuticals
Dental Practices producing hazardous waste have a duty of care to manage their waste safely and responsibly.
They are legally obliged to register with the Environmental Agency and ensure that their waste disposal is provided by reputable and accredited waste carriers for disposal – evidenced through signed consignment notes.
The producer of the waste is responsible for its safe and proper disposal, with “Duty of Care” notes documenting the transfer of waste and recording that you, as the producer, have complied fully by handing your waste over in the right receptacles – to registered carrier who will take the waste away to a licensed waste disposal site.
