Essential Nursery and Preschool Waste Disposal Guidelines for UK Settings
Understanding Nursery School Waste Management
In the nurturing environment of preschools and nurseries, waste management plays a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness and also in instilling environmental stewardship in young minds. With children’s well-being and future at heart, adopting eco-friendly waste management practices is an educational imperative.
The Waste produced in our Nurseries and schools is classed as “Offensive waste” – it is non-hazardous albeit very unpleasant! Items including nappies, sanitary waste and incontinence pads, are classed as being offensive waste.

Waste Segregation in Nursery Schools
As the offensive waste is non-infectious, the residual health risk is considered to be low – and does not require transportation as dangerous goods. However, it must be segregated properly and still requires specific labelling, storage and disposal. On a positive cost perspective, it is much less expensive to dispose of than hazardous and infectious waste.
Nursery School Waste Collection Services – Types of Bins and Bags
In our early years settings, we generate many different types of waste, which can be classified into 4 main categories:
- General Waste in Nursery Schools – this includes paper scraps, non-recyclable plastics, and food packaging. Proper disposal of general waste is essential to uphold hygiene standards and minimize environmental impact. This waste goes into General Waste bins or black bin bags.
- Nappy Waste – also known as Offensive Waste. Can nappies go into general waste or into black bin bags? The answer here is no. It is illegal for businesses to dispose of nappy waste in general waste bins. Nursery schools are entrusted with the “Duty of Care” to ensure proper disposal of nappy waste in accordance with the following regulations:
Clearly marked disposal options must be made available for nappy waste. Nappy waste bins should be regularly and hygienically emptied. Waste management should be entrusted to licensed individuals or businesses, in compliance with the Environmental Protection Act (1990). A comprehensive record of all received or transferred waste must be maintained for a minimum of 2 years, using Waste Transfer Notes.
If found not be adhering to these guidelines – they may face heavy fines of up to £5,000. Offensive waste bins and bags are usually yellow or tiger striped.
- Organic waste, such as food scraps and garden trimmings, is prevalent in nursery school settings. Composting organic waste not only reduces landfill burden but also provides valuable lessons in sustainability for young children.
- Dry Mixed Recycling Waste –
From time-to-time Nurseries may encounter hazardous waste, such as cleaning chemicals and batteries. Safely managing and disposing of hazardous waste is crucial to protect the health and safety of children and staff. Specialist hazardous waste bins and bags should be utilised.
Sustainable Waste Disposal. Zero to Landfill. Safe, compliant & no hidden costs!
Waste Segregation in Nursery Schools - Teaching Sustainability from the Start
Nursery schools and preschools are bustling hubs of learning and growth for young children. However, amidst the excitement, waste management often gets overlooked. Proper waste segregation, especially regarding nappy waste, is vital for both the environment and teaching children about sustainability.
Let’s explore why waste segregation matters in these early learning environments and how platforms like GreenCircleDirect.com offer a solution.
Environmental Impact:
Waste, especially nappies, has a significant environmental impact in early education settings.
Improper disposal of nappies can contaminate landfills and contribute to harmful methane emissions.
Segregating waste enables better recycling and composting, reducing the strain on landfills and promoting a circular economy.
Health and Hygiene
Mishandling nappy waste poses health risks for children, caregivers, and staff. Segregating nappy waste allows for proper hygiene protocols, reducing the risk of contamination and infections.
Educational Opportunities
Teaching waste segregation instils a sense of environmental responsibility in children from a young age.
Hands-on activities like sorting recyclables and compostable teach children about reducing, reusing, and recycling, fostering eco-conscious behaviour early on.

Nursery School waste management guidelines - Keeping it Legal
The Waste Management Duty of Care Code of Practice code outlines the responsibilities of waste producers which includes our Nursery Schools. It emphasises the importance of proper waste classification, documentation, and tracking through consignment notes.
If found not be adhering to these guidelines Nurseries may face heavy fines of up to £5,000.
The Waste hierarchy outlined in HTM 07-01 , serves as our roadmap to nursery school waste management success, highlighting prevention, repurposing, recycling, and more. It’s all about giving items a second lease on life whenever possible and minimising our reliance on landfills.
The Environmental Protection Act of 1990 legislates that businesses producing clinical waste have a duty of care to manage their waste safely and responsibly. They are legally obliged to register with the Environmental Agency and ensure that their waste disposal is provided by reputable and accredited waste carriers for disposal – evidenced through signed consignment notes.
The service provision from Green Circle Direct keeps you compliant – providing the obligatory consignment note and waste declaration form every time a collection is made – all downloadable from your digital account at a moment’s notice – vital for any inspection.
