Urban Farming – Creating more Space
Over the last century, due to both dramatic volume increase in and the industrial methods of the production of foodstuffs, we have witnessed the destruction of forests, rainforests, woodlands, wetlands and grasslands. All of which were the natural habitat of countless species. This loss of biodiversity has been proven to be one of the root causes of the increase in greenhouse gas emissions. How? The carbon locked away by nature (for hundreds if not thousands of years) within these trees and plants and the soil they are grown in has been released when they were destroyed. Added to this, without the trees to absorb the carbon in the atmosphere created by our lifestyles and use of fossil fuels we are now out of balance and the dangerous cycle continues to escalate.
Our industrial farms and methods of farming are also culpable. Years of farming every inch of available space and use of fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides have taken their toll.
However, with a population that continues to accelerate the need to increase food production is vital and begs the question – how can we get more from less? At the same time how do we allow nature to recover? How do we reduce the proportion of land surface that we occupy and give space back to the wild?
